electro magnetic steering lock

Hey folks, thanks again for the advice on the front fogs all fitted and working now, much appreciated.

My new issue as the heading suggests is the electro magnetic steering lock. Having a lot of issues getting the car to start, when I put the keys in it does lots of clicking and clunking and the steering warning flashes yellow. A bit of locking the car and shoogling the steering wheel will see it eventually start but the problem is getting worse. My wee independent VW specialists tells me it is showing a fault in the control module and that the part is £800 plus VAT and that it is a dealer only fit as it will require coding afterwards. So add to that the labour cost and you can imagine i'm gritting my teeth or bending over if you prefer! Anyone with any experience advice or help would be much appreciated.
