2011 2.0 bluemotion estate

Hi

Have owned the above car for a year now but recently it hasnt been able to find 1st gear or reverse or 2nd? It was after a stop at the lights and after I parked it once. On both occasions I could only find 3rd gear or 4th gear to take off?

I'm havibg a guess that I have coasted from either 3rd or 4th to a complete stop and the car hasn't allowed me to drop down to these lower gears as a saftery measure to prevent me doing damage to the engine from high speeds down to 1st gear? This is just a complete guess by me but would like to hear if anybody else has has this problem with the gear box?
