Motorway Fuel Consumption

Hello all,

I'm new here - recently changed job and am now travelling 110 miles per day round trip to and from work. I've got a Volvo XC70 at the moment that averages 35MPG, so need to change. I like VW's having had a number of Golf's in the past so am looking at Passats - I need an estate car due to dog and kids etc. I'm looking for honest real life fuel consumption on motorways from various engines - and general advice on what to buy and look out for. I want to spend up to 10K as in 3 years time any car that I buy will be worth very little. Your advice and experiences are welcomed.

Also - info on the VW emissions scandal and impacts to engines would be useful
