Tailgate showing as open

I have a Passat Estate 2013. The tailgate lock stopped locking/latching and made a horrible wurring noise when you pulled the tailgate opening switch (under number plate) I have now replaced the lock mechanism and the tailgate now locks and unlocks as normal but the interior light stays on and the dash display shows the tailgate as being open.
I'm very short of cash so can't go to a vw dealer so I'm hoping that someone may be able to provide some advice?
