Emergency Key Blade

I have lost the emergency key blade which fits into the electronic ignition key for my B7 Passat.
Replacements are available on eBay but do these have to be coded in order for them to be used or are they just a particular fit for whatever they are used for?
I took mine out to reset the front passenger airbag switch in the glove compartment.
