Need a solution - cannot skip tracks when using Bluetooth

So I’ve picked up a nice R-line estate B7 with a DAB radio RCD310 and bluetooth. All works fine but I can’t skip tracks or control Spotify from my phone using either the head unit controls or steering wheel controls.

Is there a simple way around this that isn’t fitting another head unit like an RCD510, guessing that would cost me a fair few quid.

In the glovebox there’s a pull out media in unit so I was wondering if getting a USB cable adapter for that would do it or whether or not swapping the Bluetooth module for a different one would do the trick.
