Diagnostic tools - which would you recommend

Hi, I’ve encountered the airbag fault warning lights and after surfing the net came across this great website.
I’ve fiddled with connections under the seat and now want to clear the code ahead of MOT at the start of the month.
I bought an elm327 but that did not work.
I have browsed through old threads and there are a number of suggestions so I thought for new users there could be a single thread listing the diagnostic tools available which are proven to work on b7 passats. Btw, my Passat is diesel, I think that can sometimes make a difference?
