Engine wont start

Good afternoon. Driving to work my car just cut out i had to get it towed home, now my friend got the VCDS linked up but it said Cannot connect to ECU.. we have checked all fuses checked the wiring harness to see any broken wires, chaffed, etc . All seem ok the only other thing is the 100w relay in the main fuse box could be at fault , im getting a new one tinorrow to try a d eliminate that... my Question is could that stop the VCDS connecting to the ECU? Passat 2012 2.0l TDI. hope that makes sense. Regards Andrew
