2.0 TDI Engine Fan

I recently bought my B7 estate. Tonight I drove about 2 miles before stopping at a friend's house. When I got out of the car the fan continued to run for around 5 minutes. I was surprised by this as the engine was barely warm and the air temperature was about 9 celsius. Can anybody tell me if this is normal, please? I would only expect this to happen with a hot engine on a warm/hot day.
