Fitting a new battery

Post by mrderv » Mon Jan 08, 2018 8:22 am

Morning All

Colder temperatures seem to be taking a toll on my battery which is coming up to 5 years old. Starting the engine seems to be a struggle as it feels like it's about dead when the starter is cranking the engine. The engine fires into life, it's just that initial turning over when you think you might have to jump start it, then when it fires up, your bum relaxes and all is good with the world :hyst

I have my eyes on an Exide EK700 battery which seems to provide the best CCA capacity of all the others available for this battery type/size, but before i purchase one, does the B7 require programming to tell it there's a new battery installed? Or can you just swap it out without the faff? I had a BMW 320d that required programming to replace the battery, which was a pain in the bum to do. I'd hate to have to do the same with this :(

Morning, my car turned 6 beginning of November.. sounds similar to what I had.. anyway early December I decided to get a new battery.. I got a 2.0TDI with stop/start.. the battery I needed was a type 096. Easy enough to change, the box it’s in is awkward, take off the plastic covers & the surrounds, to the left of it it’s bolted in - awkward part, I think it’s a 13mm bolt, think, need an extension bar to get at it.. undo that & away you go.. disconnect the earth, the positive.. swop battery & do reverse.. no reprogramming or anything. Jumped in the car, glow plugs off, presses the key & within 1 or 2 turns up she fired..

Sounds good. I was hoping it was that simple. I'm ok with the DIY bit, plenty of tools to do the job :) Managed the cambelt on my own, but i'm just stuffed if it comes to coding a battery lol :(

Deanogee - Any tips on removing the battery box? Did you have to remove any of the air cleaner assembly to the left looking in as is suggested by Haynes manual?

If it's stop start then it should be coded you can get troubles further down the line like fault lights coming on

Had to get a new battery on mine this winter.
Euro wanted 250 quid.
Bought a Bosch one from here https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/types/096/ at mere mortal price.
Also the stop/start has begun working again. Happy with that come the end of the month. :D

RubberDub - Did you buy an AGM battery that is preferred for stop/start? The page you linked seems to show standard type batteries.
