Error airbag

Post by Tubbs » Thu Dec 14, 2017 8:24 am

I was parked up with engine idling this morning, when all of a sudden the airbag warning light appeared on the dash, accompanied by the message "Error airbag" on MFD. The car was in 'park' just minding its own business, so a bit odd that it should happen at that point.

Any advice or thoughts gratefully received. What ever happens it wont be taken to a VW main dealer for fix reasons. Hopefully a trip to any garage can be avoided.

cheers

Have you moved your seat at all or disturbed any wiring under them another thing you could try is to switch the passenger air bag off and on

Yes to both. Moved front seats a week or so ago whilst vacuuming.

I have previously had the airbag warning come up. It seems that once it is triggered it does not clear even if the cause self corrects. I cleared the fault code using VCDS and it has not re-appeared.

Took it to local VW specialist who ran diagnostics. Intermittent fault with passenger airbag on/off switch.
Fault gone and light cleared. Happy days.

Merry Xmas all !!

Just had this fault occur again. I noticed that the lights on the centre console that indicate when passenger air bag is disabled flashed on/off a few times with corresponding message on the dash and the air bag warning light on the dash came permanently on. All this happened in very cold conditions at 70 mph in the dark so not able to note too much. Next day the air bag warning still on. Hooked up my VCDS and it reported this:

1 Fault Found:
01228 - Airbag Cut-Off Switch for Passenger Side (E224)
008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent - MIL ON
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 10101000
Fault Priority: 2
Fault Frequency: 6
Reset counter: 255
Mileage: 170286 km
Time Indication: 0
Date: 2017.12.27
Time: 16:30:50

Time of fault seemed about right. I cycled the switch in glove compartment a few times and then cleared fault using VCDS. All now OK including the dash air bag light. The statement above 'MIL ON' seems to mean that the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) has been set to ON.
