1.8tsi oil consumption

My B7 1.8tsi is burning a litre of oil every 800 miles. This is irritating enough, but the engine also pinks quite badly because of this.

I understand it’s a design fault on early 1.8tsi engines and requires new piston rings (and for some reason new pistons and rods). VW dealers want about £3.5k to do the upgrade (despite it being VW’s fault!).

Does anyone know if this job could be done by a home mechanic? Has anyone done this job?
