2009 CC 2.0 TSI (Petrol) Electronic Rear Shock Absorber Replacement Options for this model

The (not so) wonderful original Monroe electronic rear shocks on my 2009 TSI have failed and replacements are over £200 each.

Has anybody fitted lower cost, non-electric shocks, to a 2.0 TSI, instead of the expensive original electric ones and turned off the electronic suspension using Vagcom?

If so, please post the shock make & part number so I can replace the useless originals.
