Poor fuel consumption

Post by woodentop »

Just got a B7 14 plate Executive Style TDi 140 Estate to replace a B6 58 plate Highline estate which apart from wheel/tyre size is essentially the same vehicle..

The B6 would do around 50-52mpg round town and 55mpg or more on a longer run which is just about right for the rated combined fuel consumption; towing it would do 28.5-29mpg at 60mph and quite easily get 30.5-31mpg at 55mph. In France it would do 34mpg without problem.

The best we have had out of the B7 so far is about 48.5 and usually more like 44-45, and towing (same caravan, save weight) as low as 24.8 but with some careful use of the pedal I got 27.9. Given the rated combined consumption is 61mpg it bothers me that the it is so poor, especially compared with the B6.

Anyone got any ideas or suggestions as to whether this is just as a result of the tyre size difference and the up-gearing, or have I got something wrong?

For the record: B6 235/45R17 and 60mph=2000rpm in 5th or 70mph=2000rpm in 6th; B7 235/40R18 and 60mph=slightly under 1800rpm in 5th or 70mph=slightly under 1800rpm in 6th. When towing BMT is automatically inhibited, not that it seems to make much difference anyway..
