Air Conditioning Fault

Seems my 2011 B7 has developed a fault with the sir conditioning. Took it to my local garage today for a re-gas, this didn't work, the garage say my compressor pump is faulty and showed me the center bolt was protruding.
Are these a common fault? Since it is now out of warranty would it be worth a peruse to see if VW might assist with the repair cost?
