Engine light

Post by icemen » Sun Apr 01, 2018 10:38 am

Hi peepz
My engine lights keeps coming on for a day then goes off for a week then comes back on. The car drives normal nothing wrong with it. What could it be. Mines a 2011 2.0 tdi sport 170 saloon.
Dealer said its usually something electronic and they charge 60 quid to look at it. Any1 got a WAG lead in west midlands central birmingham i could meet to check what the fault is instead of paying them for 5 min work?

It needs to be a full version vcds setup to scan your car, which is expensive to buy.

Its also more than 5 minutes work to do a proper scan.

60 quid is an absolute rip .. alot of garages will do it for free or charge like £10, as it really is just 5 minutes work, you plug it in, you leave it, it tells you what it is, a monkey could operate it.

Oh if only proper diagnostics were that easy! Fault codes only give you a indication as to what's wrong but not always the whole story, they help alot but you still have to check wiring and many more things.

Yes if its a full on investigation then fair enough, but I got the impression the OP was only referring to a code scan

I think it related to the start stop as im getting start stop error popping up now. What could cause that or is it a common problem?

Start/Stop error appears to say it's disabled due to other engine faults or ABS issues. Start/Stop isn't a seperate system on it's own, it's part of the engine ecu coding, and will require a fault code scan to determine why the engine light is appearing in the first place

Ill get it booked in with the dealers to find out what wrong. It still drives fine. Can i continue driving? What are the main reasons for stop start error?

Usually a fault with something else as mentioned above. If there's an issue with the engine or ABS/ESC, this can prevent the stop/start function from operating, hence the warning.

Update - had my car diagnosed at the dealers today, turned out to be a fault on the EGR value. Lucky, as my car had the emissions update they said it was under warranty & will replace it FOC, Arr and also said there was a recall on the coil switch which they will also do. Good result in the end going to dealers ;-)

Out of interest has anyone complaint direct to vw about software update? There 100s of thousands owners who have had egr, dpf, turbo, injector problems soon as the software update had been done. Its why dealers are replacing the egr values free of charge now to cars that have had software update. But doesnt fix the issue as it is only a short term fix which will mess new egr value over time. Surely they wont keep replacing the parts?

There's a facebook group with well over 7000 members, and beleive me, VAG group have been hounded over the issues and they still flat-out deny there is any issue.

Once they have changed the egr valve go and get it remapped to remove the emission update. I believe it could save you any more trouble in the future.
Vcds in Swadlincote/burton area of it's any help.

Depends where you are located. Best thing to do is join the following FB group and someone will give you details of your nearest garage that can reverse it for you. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1767691216860894/

Just be aware that once you reverse the update, you are no longer covered for 2 years under VW's Trust Building Measure warranty.

If you are looking to get extra power out of your car, Find a tuner that can reverse the fix first before remapping.
