Hot rubber smell and can't pop the bonnet!

After a steady drive home last night I was getting something out of the boot when I noticed a strong smell of hot rubber, I couldn't tell where it was coming from! I walked around to the front of the car and noticed the fan was running......... I turned on the ignition and the temperature showed normal, I then got my torch so I could look under the bonnet and I couldn't open it!!!! I pulled the catch in the car and and it popped up a bit then I pressed the leaver under the bonnet and it just wouldn't lift up!!!!

We have only had it 2 weeks so I have never needed to look under the bonnet, am I doing something wrong???
