Driver door open status not working

Hi,
I have a 2003 Passat Estate where the drivers door, when opened does not switch the under door light on and the car will lock itself again if another door is not opened before the timeout.
I am not sure what component flags the door open state as I could not find any switches to do this.
Any help or pointing in the right direction will be much appreciated.
