has anyone else solved the water ingress problem with a simple sheet of stiff plastic?

so after years of sponging out water from footwell I had a eureka moment and decided that our battery compartment was not filling up with water, more it was just rain falling straight into the fan, my simple solution was to cover the opening with a bathroom floor tile!, there is a small gap for the air to enter, well away from the water that floods off the windscreen, just enough to satisfy the heating requirements, 3 years on the car is still bone dry..
