AC Squeal at start up !

Getting a loud continuous squeal noise from my AC at start up, sound is the same as a slipping alternator belt. Car is 2002 1.9 B5.5. If I cycle the AC on and off a couple of times once underway then the squeal / slipping belt noise goes away after a few mins of this, and the AC then works fine after that. It was like this all last Summer but seems to have gotten worse recently.
Any idea what it could be? I've read it could be anything from failing compressor, compressor clutch, crank pulley rubber seal (if it has one?) harmonic balancer. I have a spare second hand AC compressor but don't want to change it if it's not the compressor?
