Car stalls when driving

Hoping someone can helpnor point in the right direction.
My friends Passat (my old b5.5) has developed an intermittent fault. I have not witnessed it myself due to the lockdown.
Whilst driving he says all warning lights on dash come up as if you turned the ignition on, display says stop car and it stalls.
This happens whilst driving and not between gear shifts. He doesn't drive the car hard and its not happened on the motorway.
Some info: Car is an 1.9tdi AWX and the EGR has been unplugged since 2014 or so. I did the Mr Muscle turbo clean in 2017. Fuel filter was renewed Aug 2019
