Bleed front Brakes VCDS ? or Not?

Got to change my front brake pipes on my B5.5 tdi, advisory on MOT. I'm OK changing and bleeding brakes, but I'm confused if I need VCDS to cycle the ABS pump. some say you need to do it others say all you need is a pressure bleeder ? Confused ? Don't want to end up with air in the ABS pump and soft brake pedal.
