Intermiitent starting problem

I have an intermittent starting problem on my Passat 1.9 TDI Estate.

I turn the key wait for the heater plug light to go out turn the key further and sometimes nothing.

No starter motor turning, no sound of a stuck Bendix is it called ?, no clicking just nothing.


Usually turning the key back all the way, and one retry will see it start normally, but lately its some time taken two or three goes.


Is this a simple starter motor solonoid problem? is this typical for diesel passats?

I'm not 100% sure but sometime feel I might not have heard the fuel pump noise when I turn the key. could this be related?
