Tandem pump loose vac side

Post by Gazwould » Tue Oct 08, 2019 4:55 pm

Whilst doing the lovely coolant / breather hose at the back of the head I noticed the left ( vac side) of tandem pump was loose .

It's the oversleeved with two original one use clips , thinking the nearest to tandem pump was loose I removed it and put on a jubilee with no success .

Same as this AVB .

Car not back together as top boost hose ducting off .

Not started and can't seem to hear the usual gush of fuel priming !

What to do ?

It’s a relatively common thing mate. Most people I see either put another pump on, or use JB weld style liquid metal to fix it back properly.

Cheers Aiden , it's either been like that or has been disturbed doing the hose .

Would an adhesive sealant like Sikaflex EBT work ?

I'd not bother bodging with sealant. Ebay is fully loaded with spare vac pumps at decent enough prices. Just be sure to use a decent new gasket or it will leak!

Which all have the same issues.

Just buy a new one, 200 or less.

I've seen this a few times as well.

I'm not entirely sure that it isn't normal.

Any wobble will surely get "sucked off" when the vacuum starts sucking.... :-

I'll have a look at mine tomorrow.

Mine was loose a few years ago, just like that one in the video. I dismantled it and I seem to recall it was just the hose clip that needed replacing/tightening up.

I any case, it's been no trouble since then,

No, although it's impossible not to look when I see them up for sale Aidan, and if I saw the right one at the right price, who knows?
I'm working my way through little niggles on this one.
That j.b weld is good stuff isn't it? Seem to have some encouragement from the right sources for the bodge Gaz, I 'll watch with interest. ;)

No rush now as the Merc is out of hospital .

But I do like the idea of a reliable back up car .

This , a mop , 2 front wings , a cl unit and ac condenser and regas and it'll be better than ever .

Recently learned a MOT tester who did the ARB C links and wheel bearing had been passing these prematurely worn items for years :-q

Don't.. last stay was end of July to early October , throttle valve issue finally sorted with a never before wiring repair !

It's quite a car away from hospital , 60mpg+ , big bolstered Sports seats , the chunky multifunction flat bottomed steering wheel , AMG styling , and the RWD surprisingly never felt out of shape despite the 580 Nm .

Gaz, I thought your simile,"Like excrement to the underside of a school desk" an excellent illustration of how the generations have changed. "When I were a lad" the undersides of the adolescent's desks depicted their newly discovered ability to masturbate unnoticed when our slit skirted nylon clad French teacher was hosting the class. It was a female by the way, I know that doesn't necessarily follow nowadays.

Been on there 6 years plus, still going strong, but you have to use plenty of brake cleaner first.

The old boy is thinking like this and said it won't affect anything !

Engine running if you disturb it you can hear the loss of vacuum .

Still weirdly not getting the slosh of fuel priming noise .

Only way to find out...
