Driving along engine starts knocking

Just on a gentle drive home aprox 40mph suddenly a loud thumping noise engine looses power losses 2 cylinders. Got towed home no dash warning lights nothing on the code reader? 03 Passat 1.9tdi 4motion estate. 170k. Ive had it 12 years regular service with oils regardless of miles. Tried to start tonight ran like on 2 cylinders, popped farted now dead. Any ideas? Had cam cover off all ok underneath. Can't turn over using cam pulley or starter.
