Faulty Climatronic on 1999 1.9tdi Wagon?

Okay folks.

The compressor for the climatronic is knackered on our 1999 Passat 1.9 tdi Wagn. Get's kinda hot here in SW France but specialists are very thin on the ground. Had it regassed last summer by a French garage. Shortly after compressor got very noisy so we stopped using it. Only use the system now with the ECON button on (which means no compressor I believe).

Question? Is there a budget way to solve this problem? I presume replacing the compressor is not DIY work and therefore costly?
