Dilemma

Post by bobfish45 » Wed May 29, 2019 9:12 pm

Could be a sad day for me.Thought an Audi a6 avant at weekend and now have to decide what to do about the passat. The wife may decide to run it but I do not think it would take her long to ruin it. much too good to break so it may come up for sale if I can hear to part with it :-?

Good luck c6 isn't without it's faults! Nice cars but I feel a little cramped in the cabin with its sloping roof etc

Not had much of a chance to look Gaz. Collected it on Monday from Wales, came down to Cornwall 5am Tuesday. It's been fine all week but I'll put it on the diagnostics when I get back and let you know the results. Seems to have a slight misfire on tickover.

Had the a6 for a couple of weeks now, oh it's a bre engine Gaz. Went down to Cornwall the day after buying it and realised that I am now officially old !!! The journey was so much easier than in my passat :The car isn't any fun at all, although it is deceptively quick,it's completely anonymous to look at and doesn't have any of the visual character of the passat But, the mmi system, big seats, bluetooth dash display and the sheer comfort of the driving experience is very seductive. We left Cornwall to come home at 0615 and were home at 1135 including an hours stop altogether for food and women pi**in. 338 miles and I felt quite refreshed, and whilst my passat would have made the same time, it would have needed driving.Of course you would say "that's why we modify our passats, because we like driving them", and yes that's true, but those long journeys are easier in one of these a6's.
So, I suppose the passat will be in the classifieds soon, warts and all, and I shall have to hope that someone will enjoy it as I have, it still looks great and I hope it sells out of the area, I don't really want to see someone else in it

I was aware of this problem Gaz, and also injector problems. Funnily enough my mate Will did one in his garage a couple of weeks ago and we were perusing the shaft. I did read quite some time ago about a modification, I will try to find out more. Either way I think it will be one of those jobs to be done before rather than after the event. There's a local machine shop and it may be worth while having one made in a different steel.

The actual hexagonal shaft, it was his brothers car and the shaft was really quite rounded off. Also the driven sprocket was less than perfect. It's a sump off job and balance box taken off for resetting, big job but he made it look easy, he's a cracking mechanic. As in that article, the car went from sounding normal to sounding horrible and the noise was such that it was very hard to place. From the top of the car it sounded like it was coming from the front of the camshaft, and from underneath as if it was mid block area. Anyway it has survived,so maybe prevention is better than cure.

Definitely in this case .

Don't forget the balancer shaft keyway itself and primary cause is toast hense it's a kit job .

BRE more expensive as best converted to gear driven with appropriate modified remanufactured kit .
