Quality Shocks

I'm getting a "soooooosh" sound from the back left shock when I go over speed bumps. The same sound one hears from the boot hydraulic when the boot is opened.
I'm guessing this is a bolloxed shock, right?
I'm going to order a couple tomorrow, am I right that they have to be done in pairs?
And finallly can anyone recommend a good quality brand?
