Front wheel movement in 3/9 o'clock position

Post by bhodgkiss »

Hi All,

I have a B5 and a B5.5 Passat.

Jacking up the front wheel (just one side at a time) and rocking the wheel hard in the 3/9o'clock position I get movement on both wheels on both cars.
If I rock lightly there's no movement.

I presume there is supposed to be an amount of steering rack play, which I can see is where the movement is coming from (the outboard trackrods look fine)

Both cars at 225k-230k miles.

Or should I feel zero play however hard I rock the wheels? (and I mean rocking hard!). Should all the suspension arms (if new) prevent any play at all?

The one car has a 5yr old Lemforder kit, and newer outer track rod ends, the other car has a mix of parts, some quite old...

Thanks
