Grinding noise from front driver side?

Hi All
B5.5 4Motion Tdi Estate.
Every wheel rotation on the front right (when car is rolling) there is a grinding noise with every rotation.
If I jack up the car and spin the wheel, no noise is heard.
Nothing is rubbing on the driveshaft or wheels.
It sounds metallic - its not a nice sound.
No knocking on full lock. But can it be a CV joint?
Its been doing it for weeks and doesn't seem to be anything stuck between disc and pad (no scoring on disc)
The discs and pads are probably 6 months old.
