I replaced the thermostat on both mine and my wifes my 05 tdi's yesterday and drained the water by removing the lower temp sensor. I noticed it was a bit crusty so I cleaned it up as best i could and want to replace it. However I noticed it's a flat faced blue sensor unlike the green coolant sensor that goes in the block. I'm struggling to locate a replacement, I can find one for the 97-00 but not for later. Now I'm almost 100% sure that that one will do the job, however does it have to be the flat type or can I use the blue type that is shaped like the green one? Like the example below...
