Drivers window woes

My 1997 1.8 saloon is playing up. Tonight, I lowered the drivers window to escape work and there was a grating scratching clunking sound as went down. Then a series of scraping noises as it tried to go up only to stall near the top. Now it wont go down unless you press the button a bit and then manually press the glass down, and if you press down or up for long enough, after a lot of metallic scratching it does go up. It's in a right state but what do I need to repair it / what's caused it? The car's completed 190,000 miles but is too good to let go.
