Almost nine years between timing belt changes!!

Just changed my bros b5 1.9 tdi pd (AJM one with PITA tensioner damper)
Last done 6/2009 @ 158k
Done today @ 214k
Thought id better change it mainly due to age but the early pds had a recommended interval of just 40k miles so having done 56k miles it didnt hurt to be changed! Belt looked ok ish but waterpump had a tight spot on rotation! Got the distance between damper and tensioner to a smidge over 3mm first time and decided to leave it at that (tolerance i believe is 4mm +/- 1mm)
Anyway starting to think the pds are good for 10 years, 60 k (min)? Wonder if the vw intervals are simply a sales ploy??
