5 speed manual gearbox.

It's been a long time sinse posting on here but I have a problem that needs to be sorted re my gearbox.
I have a 5 speed manual attached to a AWX engine, a B5.5 54plate model.
The gearbox has been a bit whiney for a while but has now reached a new noise level and the excitement of a potential box failure cant be far away. Any way...I figured...no a mate figured a while back that things may improve with a fluid change. Has anybody got info on which grade oil I should be using and what quantity I'll need.
Secondly...if the oil change doesnt make any difference and the box is goosed does anybody know the gearbox code for a replacement or does anybody have one knocking around at a reasonable price.
