2 ltr petrol B5.5 question

Post by Simon S »

Hi all, I a from the UK and this is my third Passat. The first was a 1980's 1.6 that i rolled and nearly killed me and my GF of the time. The second was a 1.8 and was a good car, My latest is a 2.0 *v Passat, in very tidy condition apart from some water under the carpets and resultant electrical gremlins.
I have a question for for others who know this car.
When I am driving to work in the mornings, if the heater is on and the outside temp is around 10ºC the engine struggles to reach normal temp over a distance of around 12 miles. If a drive hard it's warm within 5 miles. To me that sounds like the thermostat is partly open and the rad is slightly warm despite not reaching normal temperature.
So does that sound normal for this engine or if not where is the stat? I can't see it under the alternator and from memory the VW DXDZ engines had it one the back of the head?
Any ideas?
