Loss of power steering after driving through a puddle

Hi,

When driving home tonight the car (03 plate 1.9 tdi) I had to drive through a rather large puddle on the passenger side. As I drove out of the puddle the power steering seemed to fail for a moment and I noticed the battery light on the dash was flashing. Then it recovered again. Does anyone know what was happening to the car when this happened, and how to fix it, aside from not driving through deep puddles ever again.
