V6 tdi starting issues

Hi all, I have a 2002 V6tdi.
My issue is when cold it takes a lot of cranking to get it started. When hot It starts fine. It seems that when left for 6 hours its not too bad, but if left for a week it takes a lot of cranking.
I have a flashing dash coil light, it was intermittent but is now on permanently.
When running, the engine seems to have plenty of torque but the acceleration is not as good.
I suspect the fuel pump in the tank may have failed and would like to know if anyone here has a view on this.

Also, can anyone reccommend a code scanner. I bought one from ebay supposedly dedicated to VAG vehicles, it was as much good as a chocolate teapot.
