Creaking and groaning steering

Hi,

I have recently acquired a nautical sound to my steering. It sounds like I'm on the high seas sailing on a man o' war tall masted ship when I turn the steering wheel. Whilst I'm ex Royal Navy and sometimes feel nostalgic for my days at sea I don't think my car should be sounding like an extra from master and commander. I'm gutted as I've just forked out for an injector and a cam belt change so I'm hoping this won't be too expensive to rectify. I've topped up the hydraulic fluid but still no change. Any advice - thoughts are welcome shipmates!

I should add it's a 1.9 tdi manual 03 plate
