head gasket sniff test on diesels?

head gasket sniff test on diesels?
i have a suspicion that the head gasket is blowing on my 1.9tdi sport, symptoms are that pressure is building up in the coolant side and coolant is being pushed out of the overflow of the coolant reservoir, there is no sign of oil so i am doubting its the oil cooler. the coolant loss is more when doing motorway driving, non motorway it looses about a litre every month so not a lot. would a sniff test be reliable enough to detect a head gasket problem given the small amount of coolant loss?
