Real world fuel economy of the 1.9tdi 110BHP AFN?

Post by alpenweiss2 »

We recently travelled back from south west France to the UK to visit family. Nearly all motorway driving and our 1999 B5 Wagon 1.9 tdi SE 110BHP managed to do just under 700 miles to a full tank. Kept the speed to around 70MPH average all the way.

This works out around 42MPG, which to me is not very impressive for a diesel? It also contrasts sharply with the MFA display which showed 57MPG for the same journey. I thought these cars were capable of big MPG over long distances?

Our car is very well maintained, with decent VW service history and only 142k on the clock.

Any thoughts?
