1.9 TDI AVF btw.
On way to work this morning I had the 'Alternator Workshop' warning with Battery indicator.
It lasted about 3 minutes and then was fine on way back from work(About 50 miles).
The car is parked up now till I get this fixed. Doing a bit or reading, I had come to the conclusion, that it was going to be the alternator pulley. To test, I blocked the alternator fan from turning, then eased the tension on the serpentine belt and turned the alternator pulley in the direction that it should go - which it did and the way it shouldn't, which it didn't. It worked as it should!
Whilst doing this, I noticed that the belt had a tear ALONG it, probably about 4" long.
The area of the belt does sound noisier when running than normal too. Pretty hard to identify the cause though.
What do you think is causing this? And how can I test it?
