B5.5 BONNET WONT OPEN!! HELP!

Pulled the lever inside the car to check the oil etc. and nothing...
Tried the using pliers to grab the wire and pulling HARD but no luck :-?
Anyone else been in the same boat but found a solution?
Probably the most frustrating thing to happen to my passat.. So far :roll:
