Number plate???

Basically I had my old car and had a price plate on it then I joined the Raf and on my way down there (1st day) the head gasket wen then while I was in training the mot and tax ran out and I never fixed it as it cost more that the car was worth. I want to take the plate off my old car and put it on me passat but was told my old car (with the plate on) needed to be taxed and moted. So I rang the dvla and they said something along the lines of if I can find the old mot they may be able to help but I've moved heaven and earth and carnt find it has anyone ever had this problem? Does anyone know what I can do????
