'99 1.8T Gear crunches into in 2nd when cold

Post by NEB5 »

I've noticed over the last week I get a crunch when I go into 2nd gear when I first drive the car from a cold start. Eventually it goes away after abut 15 minutes or so.

I've done a bit of googling and it's possible that it's just a case of changing the gearbox oil, but I do wonder whether it could well be other issues. The clutch for instance has never been changed since I've had it from 83,000 miles to 189,000 miles, so its quite likely to be the original, but then there are no signs of it slipping and most of the mileage that I have clocked up has been on the motorway and I think it was last used as a fleet car originally before I got it. Plus I'm not the sort to hold the car on hills with the clutch, I usually use the handbrake. It hasn't been remapped either, hence.

Any thoughts on what's causing the crunch?

Cheers!
