Remote Central Locking

Hey, just bought my passat (1.8 20v B5) and dead chuffed.

One of the few problems with it that enabled me to get it cheap was that the remote central locking is not working. The previous owner says that the key was fully functional until one day it simply stopped working. He believes that the key needs re-programming. Is this something I can do myself as you can with Mk.4 Golfs etc by using the valet key in the door with the normal key in the ignition? or will i need to go spend loads of money at the VW garage to get them to sort it?
