Control Arm Bushings Replacement DIY

Post by 1964johnr »

2002 Passat 1.9 SE TDII had the very common clunking noise over bumps about a year ago which turned out to be a couple of disintigrated bushings on the control arms. Garage replaced two complete control arms at a cost of £300. Here we are a year later and the noise has returned as well as another common sign - squeaking on application of brakes. It seems to me that all of the bushings are likely to go given their age and i'm thinking of attacking the job myself but am not sure how difficult it will be or what tools I might need. I do some of the easier work on my car like oil and filter changes and straight forward component changes, but haven't tackled anything to difficult yet. anyone have any views as to if this job will be managable for me and if so are there any instructions anywhere ? Thanks.
