No start after fuel filter change

Post by 1964johnr »

Just changed the fuel filter on my 1.9 TDI, it's the one with the mickey mouse clip on it.

Undid the clamp
Removed the two fuel lines from the ports
lifted out old filter from holder
placed new filter in holder
attached fuel lines to ports being careful to attach lines to right ports
Did clamp up to hold new filter in place

cranked engine over, car started first time, idled for a minute and then died.
Tried cranking engine several times but wouldn't start.
Left it for a while then turned ignition key half way to allow fuel to be pushed in to the system. I did this several times and could hear it whooshing through if I left the car door open.
Tried cranking the engine, but wouldn't start.
Possible error could be FAILING TO FILL THE NEW FILTER WITH FRESH DIESAL BEFORE PLACING IT IN POSITION.
Does anyone think this could be the issue. I didn't bother because last time I changed the filter this wasn't an issue. If so, if I fill the filter with diesal and then crank it up should this be sufficient or could there be another issue. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I have some time in the morning to try and work it out.
