ESP light coming on intermittently

Over the past couple of months the ABS light has come on whilst driving and I've had no traction control as a result. When it comes on, it makes no difference if I push the ESP button. It won't change. However, once I turn the car for a while and then turn it back on all is normal again. Sometimes a very quick off/on doesn't reset it.

I did a quick google and can see that I'm not the only one with this fault but thought someone might be able to suggest a possible remedy (as cheaply as possible!!)
