Loud and I mean loud engine tapping. Tdi

So I got my first tdi wagon today.

It's a B5 tdi auto.

Had a nice long drive (170miles) home in it, and then ten miles from home it all went a bit pair shape. Just wondering if anyone has experienced the same issue I'm having.

Idling or close to idling it makes the most horrific tapping noise. I mean almost fingers in ears noise. When I put my foot on the accelerater it goes away, take foot off and it comes back. It sounds like it's coming from the "big block in the middle", but could be nearer the front where the pulleys are. Not sure as it's that loud I'm struggling to localise it.

It still drives fine, it's just that damn noise. It doesn't make any difference if its in D, N, R, or P. Same noise same rules. Foot on gas goes away, foot off gas burst ear drums.

Anyone got any ideas?
