Vagcom query? Help needed

Hi all been looking through the forum and have seen Vagcom is used to read the fault codes.
Can anyone suggest where i can obtain the item in question and any other relevant bits needed
I know it will be big money but have been spending loads on garage fees for simple silly faults as it turns out so was hoping to be able to sort myself instead of costly garage cheers for any info.
